2003 Mary Blair

Artist Mary Blair is celebrated as Disney’s greatest color stylist (her colleague Marc Davis compared her to Matisse) and widely credited with introducing the sensibilities of modern art to Disney. She joined the studio in 1940, and a year later was among the artists who joined Walt on his three-month goodwill tour of South America. She later said that the trip changed her life, and the Latin influence is evident in all of her subsequent work. After the trip, she was named art supervisor on Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros. She also created concept art and contributed color styling to such features as Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, as well as such short subjects as “The Little House” and “Susie the Blue Coupe.” She is probably best known for her design work on it’s a small world, which is pure Mary Blair in style and concept. Her final Disney projects included new mosaic murals for Disneyland’s Tomorrowland and for the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World. Mary passed away in 1978.
