2001 Herb Ryman

In 1953, Walt asked artist Herb Ryman (honored by the NFFC posthumously) to translate his ideas for an amusement park into drawings. Over a single weekend, he put Walt’s dream on paper. Herb served as art director for Fantasia and Dumbo, but his work on Disneyland was the centerpiece of his Disney career. Among his contributions were designs for Main Street USA, Sleeping Beauty Castle and New Orleans Square. He also contributed concepts for the Jungle Cruise and Pirates of the Caribbean. He retired from Disney in 1971, but returned to work on Epcot. He created concept drawings for the American Adventure and the China pavilion, and later developed the Hall of Presidents. Herb died in 1989 while working on designs for Disneyland Paris.
