2008 Hank Dains

Every Guest who has been drawn into the living stories told by merchandise locations, restaurants and other locations in Disneyland, the Magic Kingdom and other Disney parks has experienced the magic created by Hank Dains, interior designer and property director. Fresh out of the Navy, Hank took advantage of the GI Bill to earn a certificate in interior design. It was during one of his early jobs that fate took him to Disney. He was hanging draperies for Lillian Disney when a drill bit broke. Hank eventually got a replacement from Walt, along with a ride on Walt’s train and a six-week job that turned into 36 years. Hank was hired several months before the opening of Disneyland, and first worked on designs for the park as well as on The Mickey Mouse Club. He was working as an area manager at Disneyland when he was invited to go to Florida to oversee the interior design planning for the Magic Kingdom. What was originally intended to be a short-term assignment became 20 years. Hank was involved in the openings of Epcot, Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios), Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris before he retired.
