1998 Joe Grant

Joe Grant’s ties to Disney date to 1933 (when Walt hired him to create celebrity caricatures for Mickey’s Gala Premiere) but he started full-time in 1937. He worked on the story and character development of Snow White, Pinocchio, The Reluctant Dragon, and Make Mine Music. He founded the Character Model Department and co-wrote Dumbo. During World War II, he worked on many patriotic short subjects, including Der Fuehrer’s Face. Joe joined Walt and conductor Leopold Stokowski on a retreat to choose the music for Fantasia, and then led the film’s story development. He left Disney in 1949 to pursue his own interests. Then, in 1989, he got a call asking him to consult on Beauty and the Beast and his second career began. He worked on The Lion King, Aladdin and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, among other films. His career came full circle when he created the storyline for the flamingo with a yo-yo sequence in Fantasia 2000.
