1999 Mary Costa

Walt gave 22-year-old soprano Mary Costa her first professional singing job when he cast her as the voice of Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. Her beautiful voice helped turn the film’s songs (including “Once Upon a Dream”) into Disney standards. After Sleeping Beauty, Mary had a successful opera career across Europe and the United States, including appearances at the Metropolitan Opera and Covent Garden. In 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy asked her to sing at a memorial service for the late President Kennedy. Despite such success, Mary says Sleeping Beauty is the highlight of her career because it keeps her in touch with children.
