2000 Ruthie Thompson

Ruthie Thompson lived on the same street as Walt and Roy’s uncle, and Ruthie was among the children they paid 25¢ to run up and down the street while they filmed the Alice comedies. Later, Ruthie walked into Walt Disney Productions one day in the late 1930s and didn’t depart until 40 years later. In between, she worked as a painter, a final checker, an animation checker and, finally, as the supervisor of scene planning. Scene planners determine the camera mechanics of a scene, such as figuring out how to move the background so that a character appears to walk on a tree. Ruthie was also one of the first three women to join the cinematographer’s union.
